Edible Wedding Cake Toppers and Figures

A handmade topper is what makes a wedding cake feel personal. Figures of the couple, a monogram, a beloved pet, a first dance pose: it all comes down to the right paste and a steady hand. Squires Kitchen High Definition modelling sugarpaste stays soft while you work then dries firm to hold fine detail, exactly what you want for faces, hands and small features. For delicate flowers, bows and trailing leaves, sugar florist paste rolls thinner and crisper. Once your figures have dried, bring them to life with edible colouring pens for faces, lettering and fine outlines, then add a soft sheen with a brush of lustre dust. Make them well ahead of the day and they double as a keepsake. All made or curated in Preston, England.

How do I make an edible wedding cake topper?

Model the shapes from a firm modelling paste like Squires Kitchen High Definition modelling sugarpaste, which holds fine detail and dries hard. Build the larger parts first, let them firm up, then add the smaller features. Once dry, paint faces and detail with edible colouring pens and add shine with lustre dust.

How far in advance can I make a cake topper?

Weeks ahead. Modelling paste dries hard and keeps well, so toppers and figures are best made early to give them time to set fully. Store finished pieces somewhere cool, dry and dark, and keep them out of the fridge to avoid condensation.

Are edible cake toppers actually edible?

The modelling paste and colouring are food safe and edible, but most hand modelled toppers are kept as a keepsake rather than eaten, especially if they sit on wires or cocktail sticks for support. Anything with a non edible support should be removed before serving.
