A cake for Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday
It's not every day that a baker gets to mark a moment like this.
Our brand ambassador, Great British Bake Off finalist Josh Smalley, created the
centrepiece birthday cake for Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday
celebration at the University of Leicester, working alongside 2018 Bake Off winner Rahul Mandal. It took days of preparation and one full, dedicated decorating day to bring the vision to life.
The cake was four tiers. Each one captured a different part of Attenborough's career: a chocolate globe on top, a jelly ocean with sea creatures set inside it, sugar glass for the Arctic and Antarctic, and a jungle tier at the base.
Around the cake, a hand-crafted biscuit panel carried illustrations from some
of his most celebrated series, including Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Africa and Dynasties. The whole piece was decorated using Rainbow Dust and Squires Kitchen products, including ProGel food colours, sugarpaste, edible cake paint and chocolate colouring, among others.
Josh said: "There's always a moment when you wish you could keep a cake like this forever. But baking is about sharing it with people. That's the whole
point."
The cake was unveiled at the university where Attenborough grew up, surrounded by buildings that carry the family name. Coverage ran on BBC and ITV News.
This is exactly the kind of project that sits behind everything we do, and we are proud to support the talented bakers who make moments like this possible.
