- Rainbow Dust Powder Colours in;
- Cocoa Butter
- 750g Renshaw Cassis Ready to Roll Icing
- 500g Renshaw White Ready to Roll Icing
- 7-inch round sponge cake (4” tall) layered and masked with buttercream
- 10-inch cake board
- 13mm and 15mm dark green ribbon
- Rolling pin large
- Flexi smoothers
- Water bottle/mister
- Icing sugar
- Painting brushes
- Paint palette
- Paint brushes – No 4 soft flat, Stiff flat, No 0 & 2 soft pointed
- Hot water bowl to fit paint palette
- Double sided tape
- Cocktail sticks
Covering the cake and board
- On a clean, dry surface, knead the White icing until pliable. Dust the work surface with icing sugar and pin out the icing to 11-inch diameter. Brush the 10-inch board with water and cover with the icing. Smooth over the surface with a smoother and trim the edge with a sharp knife. Attach the 15mm ribbon to the board with double-sided tape. Allow to set.
- On a clean, dry surface, knead the Cassis icing until pliable. Dust the work surface with icing sugar and pin out the Cassis icing to approximately 3-4 mm thick and large enough to cover the cake.
- Lift the icing over the rolling pin and cover the cake. Smooth down the icing with the palm of your hand, expelling any air from between the cake and icing.
- Smooth over the surface with smoothers and trim away the excess icing.
- To create a sharp edge, use flexi smoothers to gently ease the icing into the shape required.
- Transfer the cake to the board with a cake lifter and attach the 13mm ribbon to the base of the cake with a small amount of water.
Painting with Powder Colour and cocoa butter
- Pour 1-inch of boiled water into a bowl. Set the paint palette over the bowl.
- Place a small amount of cocoa butter in 8 of the reserves. Allow to melt.
- Mix in all the Powder Colours, apart from Snow Drift, into each of the reserves and mix with cocktail sticks until combined.
- Using a No 4 flat paintbrush, paint the background area with Holly Green. Allow to set.
- Use the No 0 pointed brush to add fine yellow lines through the dark green painted area.
- Other than the area that is being painted cover the cake with cling film.
- Dip the stiff brush into the yellow and Light Teal coloured cocoa butter and flick the bristles to splatter and speckle the cocoa butter over the area painted green. Allow to set.
- With the remaining colours of cocoa butter, paint the flowers using a pointed No 2 brush in dotted lines down the cake, alternating the dots to create strands of flowers. Work with one colour at a time and paint 2-3 strands of each at different lengths. Allow each colour to set and become touch dry before painting the next to stop the colours from blending together.
Top tip: Snow Drift can be added to coloured cocoa butter to lighten the colour and make it opaque.
